Emma Stone has once again captivated global audiences with her fearless performance in Bugonia, the highly anticipated film by visionary director Yorgos Lanthimos. Premiering at the Venice Film Festival 2025, the movie received an overwhelming 6-minute standing ovation, signaling yet another Oscar-worthy role for the Academy Award-winning actress.
In Bugonia, Stone takes on one of her most daring roles yet, going completely bald on screen in a raw and fearless performance. The psychological black comedy follows two conspiracy-obsessed men who abduct a powerful CEO, believing she is an alien planning to wipe out humanity. Starring alongside Stone is Jesse Plemons, who also received high praise for his magnetic performance.
Critics hailed Stone as “magnetic, dangerous, and utterly unforgettable,” while others called her portrayal “the most physically and emotionally demanding role of her career.” Early reviews have been glowing, with the film debuting at a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes from its first 12 reviews.
This marks the fourth collaboration between Stone and Lanthimos, following their award-winning projects The Favourite, Poor Things, and Kinds of Kindness. Notably, Stone’s role in Poor Things earned her a second Best Actress Oscar, and Bugonia could very well pave the way for her third.
Bugonia is set for theatrical release on October 31, 2025, positioning itself as a major contender for the upcoming awards season.
