England Shake Up Line-Up for Boxing Day Ashes Test as Archer Misses Out and Bethell Gets Big Call

Date:

England have confirmed their playing XI for the Boxing Day Ashes Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, making bold selection calls ahead of the crucial fourth match of the series. Fast bowler Jofra Archer has been ruled out for the remainder of the tour after suffering a left-side strain, forcing England into a change of plans for their pace attack.

Archer’s absence is a significant setback, as his speed and impact were expected to play a key role in Australian conditions. In response, Gus Atkinson returns to the side after sitting out the previous Test in Adelaide. He will lead a reshaped seam unit alongside Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue, with captain Ben Stokes and all-rounder Will Jacks available as additional bowling options.

England have also made a notable change to their batting order. Ollie Pope has been dropped, with Jacob Bethell drafted into the XI and handed the demanding number three position. Bethell will bat behind openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, while Joe Root and Harry Brook remain the backbone of the middle order. The decision highlights England’s willingness to back fresh talent and clearly defined roles under pressure.

Ben Stokes continues as captain and will once again be central to England’s balance with both bat and ball. Jamie Smith keeps wicket, while Will Jacks retains his place to offer versatility. With injuries and selection calls shaping the narrative, England head into the MCG Test aiming to reset momentum and show resilience on one of cricket’s biggest stages.
