Ex-India Opener Questions Ajit Agarkar Over Ravindra Jadeja’s Omission Says ‘He’s Not Extra Baggage’

Date:

The exclusion of Ravindra Jadeja from India’s ODI squad for the upcoming Australia tour has stirred massive debate among cricket fans and experts. Despite being a crucial part of India’s 2025 Champions Trophy victory, Jadeja’s absence shocked many, especially after chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s justification.

Agarkar stated that the selection committee decided against taking two left-arm spinners to Australia, emphasizing the need for team balance. He said, “Jadeja is very much in our plans, but with Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav already in the side, we didn’t feel the need for an additional left-arm spinner.” He further mentioned that the conditions in Australia did not warrant carrying multiple spinners.

However, former India opener Sadagoppan Ramesh wasn’t convinced by this explanation. On his YouTube channel, he strongly criticized Agarkar’s remarks, calling Jadeja a “white-ball legend” and questioning whether the selectors viewed him as “extra baggage.” Ramesh argued that Jadeja’s recent form and contributions made his exclusion unjustified.

He pointed out, “You say Jadeja was included in the Champions Trophy because you took extra spinners. Is he just an extra? He’s one of India’s most consistent all-rounders. In England, where Shubman Gill earned captaincy praise, Jadeja also performed brilliantly.”

Ramesh also cited Jadeja’s recent heroics — a century and four wickets in the West Indies Test — to highlight the inconsistency in selection. He added, “You reward Shubman Gill and Dhruv Jurel for their performances but leave out Jadeja, who has done equally well. That’s not fair.”

Jadeja’s exclusion has reignited the conversation around India’s team balance, selection policies, and treatment of senior players, as fans continue to question the reasoning behind leaving out one of the most versatile cricketers in modern Indian cricket.
