Five Early Red Flags of Colon Cancer You Should Never Ignore According to a Gastroenterology Expert

Date:

Colon cancer develops when abnormal cells grow in the colon which is the longest section of the large intestine. While it is more commonly diagnosed in older adults medical experts warn that cases among younger people are increasing making early awareness more important than ever.

The condition often begins with small growths known as polyps that form on the inner lining of the colon. Although many polyps are harmless some can gradually turn cancerous if left undetected. Because polyps rarely cause noticeable symptoms routine screening plays a key role in prevention and early diagnosis.

Dr Joseph Salhab a US-based gastroenterologist who specialises in digestive and liver health recently highlighted five warning signs that could help detect colon cancer at an early stage. Recognising these symptoms and seeking medical advice promptly can make a significant difference in treatment outcomes.

One possible indicator is ongoing abdominal discomfort particularly when pain persists for several days and occurs in the same area. Another common sign is unexpected weight loss which may happen due to the increased energy demands of cancer cells within the body.

Ongoing tiredness without a clear cause can also be a warning sign. Colon cancer may cause internal bleeding over time which can lower blood levels and lead to fatigue and weakness. Visible blood in the stool is another symptom that should never be ignored and should always be discussed with a healthcare professional rather than being dismissed as a minor issue.

A lasting change in bowel habits is also worth noting. This may include prolonged constipation diarrhoea or alternating patterns that continue for weeks. In some cases tumours can partially block stool movement or affect bowel function through hormone secretion.

Health professionals stress that these symptoms do not automatically mean cancer but they should always be checked by a doctor. Early evaluation and timely screening can help detect issues before they become more serious.
