Florida Gastroenterologist Shares 3 Simple Ways to Soothe Heartburn Without Medication

Date:

Dealing with post-meal heartburn or acid reflux doesn’t always require popping antacids. Dr Joseph Salhab, a Florida-based gastroenterologist specializing in digestion, liver, pancreas, and nutrition, reveals three easy and natural ways to calm heartburn and prevent acid reflux after meals.

One effective method is chewing gum after eating. Chewing stimulates saliva production, which enters the esophagus and forms a protective layer against stomach acid. This helps the stomach clear food and acid efficiently, reducing the risk of reflux.

Another technique is diaphragmatic breathing, also known as belly breathing. By taking deep breaths through the nose and allowing the belly to expand more than the chest, the diaphragm strengthens the barrier between the stomach and esophagus, lowering the chances of acid flowing back. Repeating this exercise three to five times after meals can make a significant difference.

Finally, walking after meals supports digestion by helping the stomach and intestines process food more efficiently. Light movement after eating reduces acid buildup and reflux, making walking a simple yet effective strategy for post-meal comfort.

These methods are easy to incorporate into your daily routine and can help relieve heartburn naturally without relying on medication. Always consult a healthcare professional for persistent or severe symptoms.
