Francis Ford Coppola Shares Honest Thoughts on Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another and Sean Penn’s Character

Date:

Legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, best known for The Godfather trilogy, has offered his candid review of Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film One Battle After Another. The movie, which has already won acclaim from critics and audiences, recently caught Coppola’s attention during a screening in Rome.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Coppola explained that although he is a longtime admirer of Anderson’s work, his personal hearing issues combined with Italian subtitles made parts of the viewing experience difficult. Still, he praised Anderson’s storytelling style, comparing it to the creative approach of Stanley Kubrick. Coppola highlighted his admiration for films like Boogie Nights, Punch-Drunk Love, Phantom Thread, The Master, and Licorice Pizza, noting how Anderson gives viewers the space to form their own interpretations.

When discussing characters, Coppola admitted he found Sean Penn’s role, Lockjaw, somewhat puzzling. He described the unusual name as “weird” and said it initially reminded him of George C. Scott’s satirical military character in Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove. Coppola admitted that this confusion might have contributed to his difficulty following certain plot points.

Despite that, Coppola was moved by the story’s emotional depth, especially its transformation into a touching father-daughter love story. He said the film’s focus on a parent’s bond with his child resonated deeply with him, and he plans to watch it again to fully appreciate the layered performances.

The star-studded cast of One Battle After Another includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, Tony Goldwyn, and Chase Infiniti. The narrative follows Bob, a former revolutionary played by DiCaprio, who lives off-grid with his daughter Willa until their peaceful life is disrupted by the reemergence of his nemesis, Lockjaw, after 16 years. Willa’s sudden disappearance forces Bob to confront his violent past in a desperate fight for survival and redemption.

Released on September 26, 2025, the film has quickly become a cultural talking point, blending political undertones with thrilling action and heartfelt drama. Coppola’s thoughtful remarks only add to the anticipation for those who have yet to see it on the big screen.
