Many people experiencing constipation or digestive discomfort often turn to products promoted as “colon cleanses” or detox drinks. These solutions promise quick relief, but health experts warn that some of them contain strong laxatives that may irritate the digestive system rather than support it. A gastroenterologist has now shared a simple homemade drink that may help improve gut health in a more natural way.
According to Joseph Salhab, a specialist in digestive and liver health, certain natural ingredients can support the digestive system and encourage healthier gut bacteria. In a recent Instagram video shared on March 8, the doctor demonstrated an easy recipe that can be prepared at home using fibre-rich ingredients and fresh fruit.
The drink focuses on nourishing the gut rather than forcing the digestive system to empty quickly, which is what many commercial detox drinks attempt to do. By including soluble fibre and natural nutrients, the mixture may help regulate digestion and improve the balance of the gut microbiome.
How to make the natural gut-support drink
Step 1: Choose a source of soluble fibre
Begin by adding one tablespoon of a soluble fibre ingredient. Recommended options include psyllium husk ground flax seeds chia seeds or hemp seeds. These ingredients are known for supporting digestion and helping regulate bowel movements.
Step 2: Add a liquid base
Next add around eight to twelve ounces of liquid. This can be plain water lemon water or milk depending on whether you prefer a light drink or a smoothie-style mixture.
Step 3: Include fibre-rich fruits
Add one or two servings of fruit to boost flavour and nutrition. Good options include kiwi berries apples pears dragon fruit mango passion fruit oranges or watermelon. Fresh or frozen fruits can both be used.
Step 4: Add fresh ginger
A small amount of fresh ginger can be blended into the drink for additional flavour. Ginger may also help reduce bloating and support stomach emptying. This step is optional but can enhance digestive benefits.
After combining all the ingredients, blend the mixture well and drink it in the morning. Dr Salhab recommends trying the drink daily for a week to see how your digestive system responds. The recipe can also be adjusted with different fruits or liquids to find the combination that works best.
Potential health benefits
The doctor explains that this drink may offer several digestive advantages because it supports beneficial gut bacteria and encourages a healthier microbiome. Soluble fibre feeds good bacteria in the gut which may help improve digestion and reduce constipation. Fruits also provide antioxidants and natural enzymes that assist the digestive process.
Unlike many detox drinks marketed as colon cleanses, this recipe does not rely on strong laxatives. Products containing harsh laxatives may cause dehydration abdominal cramps electrolyte imbalance or disruption of healthy gut bacteria. A fibre-rich drink instead supports digestion gradually while providing nutrients the body needs.
Experts recommend approaching “detox” claims carefully and focusing on balanced nutrition hydration and fibre intake to maintain digestive health.
