Gastroenterologist Reveals Top Remedy for Excessive Gas and Bloating That Actually Works

Date:

Passing gas is a natural digestive function, but when it becomes frequent and foul-smelling, it can lead to discomfort and embarrassment—especially in public settings. Recently, Dr. Joseph Salhab, a well-known gastroenterologist, addressed the issue through a video on Instagram after reacting to a woman’s viral post about a passenger releasing gas mid-flight. His response included his top recommendations for managing excessive flatulence.

According to Dr. Salhab, one of the most effective solutions for gas relief is simethicone. “This is a quick remedy that helps break apart gas bubbles trapped in the gastrointestinal system,” he explained in his video.

His second tip for travelers is to drink peppermint tea, especially if you’re at an airport. “Peppermint tea is excellent for relieving abdominal pain and spasms. It also reduces bloating and excessive gas,” said Dr. Salhab, emphasizing how natural ingredients can ease discomfort.

As a third option, he recommended Pepto Bismol, noting, “This over-the-counter medication binds with sulfur compounds in the digestive system, which makes flatulence less smelly and more manageable.”

Dr. Salhab also advised consulting a healthcare professional if gas issues persist over time, as excessive farting may indicate an underlying medical concern.

Additionally, new findings shed light on how fart smells may offer clues about gut health. According to an article published in The Conversation, flatulence contains Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), which are by-products of gut bacteria breaking down food. Different VOCs reflect the balance of your gut microbiome.

For example, a rotten egg or sulfur-like odour may be due to sulfur-containing compounds from certain bacteria, while fishy or ammonia-like smells could signal the breakdown of proteins into volatile amines. On the other hand, sweet or fruity odours may result from the fermentation of dietary fibre, producing short-chain fatty acids.

In essence, the frequency and odour of your gas can act as indicators of your gut health, digestion efficiency, and even dietary habits. Understanding these signs and incorporating remedies like simethicone, peppermint, and Pepto Bismol can help manage the issue and improve gut wellness overall.
