Breakfast is often considered the most important meal of the day because it provides the body with the energy needed to begin daily activities. However not every popular breakfast option supports digestive health. According to Palaniappan Manickam, several commonly eaten morning foods may negatively affect the gut when consumed regularly.
The digestive health specialist recently discussed on Instagram that many traditional or convenient breakfast choices are high in refined carbohydrates unhealthy fats or sugar. These foods may give a quick burst of energy but can also lead to blood sugar spikes digestive discomfort and reduced nutrition.
1 Poori with potato curry
A popular breakfast combination across India is poori served with spicy potato curry. Pooris are deep fried which means they contain a significant amount of oil. When paired with potatoes the meal becomes heavy in carbohydrates which may raise blood sugar levels quickly and lead to sluggishness soon after eating.
2 White bread with butter and jam
White bread with butter and jam is widely enjoyed around the world. However white bread is made from refined flour which contains very little fibre. Adding butter increases the fat content while jam adds high sugar levels. According to the doctor this combination can cause sudden spikes in blood glucose and may leave people feeling hungry again within a short time.
3 Instant noodles
Instant noodles are especially popular among students and busy professionals because they are quick and convenient to prepare. Despite their popularity they contain refined carbohydrates excessive sodium and several additives. These noodles also provide minimal protein or fibre making them less beneficial for digestive health.
4 Plain upma without vegetables
Traditional upma can be a balanced meal when prepared with vegetables and pulses. However when it is made only with semolina and cooked in ghee or oil it mainly delivers empty calories. Without fibre rich ingredients the dish may lack important nutrients needed for a healthy digestive system.
5 Sugary breakfast cereals with milk
Many packaged cereals marketed as healthy breakfast choices actually contain large amounts of sugar and refined grains. Even when eaten with milk the high sugar content remains a concern. Regular consumption may affect blood sugar control and gut health over time.
Dr Manickam emphasised that a balanced breakfast should ideally contain fibre protein healthy fats and complex carbohydrates. Such meals help support digestion maintain stable energy levels and keep hunger under control for longer periods.
Health experts also remind readers that dietary advice should be personalised and anyone with health concerns should consult a qualified medical professional before making major changes to their diet.
