India’s collapse for just 125 runs in the second T20I against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground has raised serious questions about the team’s tactical decisions and batting structure. One of the biggest talking points has been the constant changes in Sanju Samson’s batting position, which continues to disrupt his rhythm in international cricket.
Promoted once again to number three, Samson struggled to make an impact. This came as a surprise because the team management had earlier suggested that he needed to adapt to batting in the middle order if he wished to cement his place in India’s T20I side.
Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan reviewed the situation and stated that Suryakumar Yadav should remain permanently at number three to ensure stability in the top order. He pointed out that too much flexibility can harm a player’s confidence and clarity.
Pathan warned that constant movement in the batting order can reduce effectiveness and lead to inconsistency. He reminded that playing in the middle overs requires a different mindset compared to facing the new ball as an opener where Samson has previously scored three centuries.
Highlighting India’s experimentation in Melbourne, Pathan also mentioned the unsuccessful adjustment involving Shivam Dube’s batting entry, which further affected momentum during the chase.
He sent a clear message that the backing for Samson will not last indefinitely and the wicketkeeper-batter must deliver strong performances soon to retain his place.
India’s coaching staff now faces a crucial decision as the team looks to find the right balance and define stable roles ahead of upcoming major tournaments.
