Gavaskar Calls Out Shukri Conrad’s ‘Grovel’ Comment, Urges Transparency and Context in Public Address

Date:

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has sharply criticised South Africa head coach Shukri Conrad over his recent “grovel” remark made after the Proteas’ dominant 2-0 Test series win in Guwahati. Gavaskar described the statement as poorly chosen and said it was delivered at the “wrong time and in the wrong setting,” urging Conrad to provide clarity in his next media appearance.

The controversy began when Conrad was questioned about South Africa’s decision to avoid enforcing the follow-on despite a commanding 288-run first-innings lead at the Barsapara Stadium. Conrad responded that the team wanted India “to grovel,” a phrase that sparked immediate backlash from experts across both nations due to its tone and historical implications.

Speaking on Cricket Live, Gavaskar emphasised that the remark ignored decades of respectful cricketing exchange between India and South Africa. He highlighted India’s crucial support in South Africa’s return to international cricket after years of isolation, and pointed out how modern South African cricket — including the SA20 league — benefits significantly from Indian investment and partnership.

Gavaskar stressed that cricketing ties between the two countries have always been competitive yet respectful, never crossing into hostility. He said he is not demanding an apology but believes Conrad should address the issue publicly and acknowledge that the expression was inappropriate and unnecessary in a sporting context.

The legendary opener added that such incidents often arise in moments of heightened emotion, but clarity from Conrad would help reinforce the positive relationship shared by the two cricket boards and players over the last three decades.
