George Clooney has opened up about a pivotal moment early in his career when legendary actor Paul Newman offered him guidance that forever changed the way he handled rising fame. In a conversation with The New York Times, Clooney reflected on how overwhelming sudden recognition had become during his breakout years and how Newman’s words helped him regain balance.
While talking alongside co-star Adam Sandler, Clooney admitted that navigating public attention has always been a challenge for him. He said that stepping outside often meant spending an extra hour interacting with fans, something he admired Sandler for handling with ease. This struggle reminded him of a surprising encounter with Newman in the late 1990s that shifted his perspective.
During his time on ER, Clooney was driving a studio golf cart on the Warner Bros. lot when he spotted Newman, who was filming Message in a Bottle. Clooney stopped to casually greet him, unaware that the moment would become far more meaningful. At first, Newman didn’t recognise him, but as people driving by repeatedly called Clooney’s name, Newman slowly realised the young actor’s rising popularity.
That’s when Newman delivered the piece of advice Clooney never forgot: “George, don’t let them keep you at home.” Newman was referring to the instinct many celebrities develop to isolate themselves in order to protect their privacy. Clooney said those words instantly clicked for him, making him realise he shouldn’t let fame confine him or stop him from living fully.
Clooney has long admired Newman’s work and has openly said he has borrowed elements of Newman’s acting style throughout his career. He has praised Newman’s performance in The Verdict, calling it one of the greatest ever. Even though Newman passed away in 2008 at the age of 83, his influence remains deeply embedded in Clooney’s life and approach to Hollywood.
Currently, Clooney is promoting his latest project, Jay Kelly, which features an ensemble cast including Emily Mortimer, Billy Crudup, Greta Gerwig, Riley Keough, and Adam Sandler. The film is now playing in select theaters and will be available on Netflix starting December 5.
