India’s cricket schedule once again returned to the spotlight after Shubman Gill’s recent neck spasm reignited concerns about player workload. The young captain, who has been featuring in every format since the Asia Cup in September, missed the second Test against South Africa after the injury surfaced during Kolkata preparations. With Gill leading both ODI and T20I sides, his continuous involvement across series has raised questions about the toll such responsibilities take on a multi-format player.
Despite the growing conversation, India head coach Gautam Gambhir offered a no-nonsense stance. During Media Day interactions, former cricketer and expert Aakash Chopra revealed that Gambhir brushed off suggestions of workload management. According to Chopra, the coach stated that if Gill truly needed a break, it should come during the IPL rather than international duty, stressing that national commitments must remain top priority.
Chopra echoed Gambhir’s view, pointing out that batters experiencing good form often prefer to continue playing as long as fitness and mental clarity remain intact. He added that momentum can shift without warning, making it essential for players to maximise performance phases whenever possible.
Although the BCCI has not yet confirmed an extended absence, early assessments indicate that Gill may require around 10 days of recovery before returning to the field. Team India hopes he can regain full fitness ahead of the upcoming ODI series against South Africa beginning November 30, followed by the T20I leg of the tour.
