Gina Carano, best known for portraying Cara Dune in the first two seasons of Disney+’s hit Star Wars series The Mandalorian between 2019 and 2020, has officially reached a settlement in her wrongful termination lawsuit against Walt Disney Co. The legal battle stemmed from her 2021 firing from the show, which sparked controversy and divided fans.
The character of Cara Dune was absent from Season 3, with the storyline explaining she had been recruited by the New Republic Special Forces after helping capture Moff Gideon. Now, with both Carano and Lucasfilm issuing positive statements following the settlement, speculation is mounting that she may return to the Star Wars universe.
Carano expressed optimism in a post on X, saying, “I have come to an agreement with Disney/Lucasfilm which I believe is the best outcome for all parties involved. I hope this brings some healing to the Force.” Lucasfilm responded with praise for Carano’s professionalism on set, noting a willingness to explore future collaborations.
Fans quickly flooded social media with calls for her comeback, with many requesting to see Cara Dune return in upcoming Mandalorian seasons or even a feature film.
Why Gina Carano Was Fired
Her exit came after a series of controversial social media posts. She voiced opposition to Covid-19 vaccines, suggested the 2020 U.S. election was fraudulent, and shared a meme comparing political divisions in America to the treatment of Jews in Nazi Germany — sparking widespread backlash.
Carano defended her stance, explaining the post was intended as a cautionary reminder against societal division. In addition, she had previously mocked the use of gender pronouns online, which reportedly led Disney and Lucasfilm executives to arrange media training and other interventions, though tensions remained.
Elon Musk’s Role in the Lawsuit
Carano’s case gained renewed attention when Elon Musk personally funded her lawsuit. She praised Musk for using his resources to “fight massive injustice battles” rather than personal luxuries. Following the settlement, she thanked him publicly, calling his support a “Good Samaritan deed” and emphasizing that he sought nothing in return.
While the terms of the settlement remain undisclosed, this marks a dramatic turn in Carano’s career. Just a few years ago, Lucasfilm declared no plans to work with her, calling her posts “abhorrent and unacceptable.” With the lawsuit resolved and public opinion shifting, the door for Cara Dune’s return to The Mandalorian may now be open.
