Grigor Dimitrov Forced to Retire After Heartbreaking Injury Stops Wimbledon Shock Over Jannik Sinner

Date:

Grigor Dimitrov’s dream of returning to the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time in ten years came to a devastating halt as an unexpected injury forced him to withdraw from his round of 16 clash against world number one Jannik Sinner. The Bulgarian was just one set away from pulling off a major upset on Centre Court, having taken the opening two sets 6-3 7-5 and leaving the Italian top seed rattled.

Sinner who recently reached the French Open final had not lost a set in this year’s Wimbledon until facing an inspired Dimitrov. However midway through the third set with scores tied at 2-2 Dimitrov began showing visible signs of discomfort clutching at what seemed to be his pectoral muscle. After serving an ace he collapsed to the grass grimacing in pain shouting about his chest. Sinner immediately crossed the net to offer help as medical staff rushed in and concerned faces filled Dimitrov’s box.

Commentator Andrew Cotter described the moment as heartbreaking noting that it looked like a severe strain that could end the Bulgarian’s remarkable run. After briefly leaving for treatment Dimitrov returned to court in tears unable to continue. Supported by Sinner he managed to reach the chair umpire to shake hands officially retiring from the match amid an emotional standing ovation from the Wimbledon crowd.

The defeat marks yet another bitter blow for Dimitrov who has now been forced to retire mid-match from five Grand Slam encounters in his career. Wimbledon later confirmed he would not take part in any post-match media interviews as he continued treatment.

Meanwhile Sinner who now advances to face 10th seed Ben Shelton in the quarterfinal paid tribute to his opponent calling him a true friend and acknowledging that this was not a victory to celebrate. Sinner expressed his hope for Dimitrov’s full recovery saying he deserved better luck after years of setbacks.

Fans worldwide have shown an outpouring of support for Dimitrov whose tenacity and emotional exit have reminded tennis lovers of the unpredictable and often cruel nature of the sport. As Wimbledon moves towards its final stages many will be keeping an eye on whether Sinner can go all the way while Dimitrov focuses on healing and hopefully returning stronger in future Grand Slams.
