When someone experiences a heart attack, every second counts. Cardiologist and functional medicine expert Dr Alok Chopra recently shared essential life-saving measures that anyone, even without medical training, can perform to keep a patient alive until professional help arrives.
In a podcast episode of Impact Stories, Dr Chopra emphasized that immediate CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) is the most critical action to take if someone collapses from a heart attack without medical support nearby.
Key steps to follow during a heart attack emergency:
- Clear the area around the patient to ensure proper air circulation.
- Position yourself correctly by straddling the patient to apply maximum force during compressions.
- Apply chest compressions 3–6 inches deep on the sternum to push blood through the heart. Rib fractures may occur but saving life is the priority.
- Watch the patient’s color – if it changes back from bluish to normal, circulation is improving.
- Continue compressions without stopping until medical professionals arrive or the patient regains signs of life.
Dr Chopra explained that even rib fractures are not as serious as failing to maintain circulation. He urged people not to give up early, as CPR requires persistence.
According to the Mayo Clinic, CPR should be performed 100–120 compressions per minute. If trained, rescuers can add rescue breaths (30 compressions followed by 2 breaths). If available, an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) should be used immediately.
Why CPR matters in a heart attack?
CPR helps keep oxygenated blood flowing to the brain and vital organs, buying time until emergency services arrive. Without intervention, the patient may not survive.
