Hot Docs 2026 to Kick Off with Antidiva Documentary Celebrating Carole Pope

The Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival has officially announced that its 2026 edition will open with Antidiva: The Carole Pope Confessions, a powerful documentary highlighting the life and legacy of pioneering musician Carole Pope.

Directed by Michelle Mama, the film explores Pope’s groundbreaking role in shaping Canada’s music scene during the 1980s and 1990s. As part of the rock band Rough Trade, she challenged norms and brought themes of identity love and queerness into mainstream conversation, making a lasting cultural impact.

The festival is scheduled to begin on April 23 in Toronto, marking the start of its 33rd edition. This year’s event arrives with a refined approach following previous organisational changes, presenting a curated lineup of around 80 documentary features from across the globe.

Among the highlights is the world premiere of Saigon Story: Two Shootings in the Forest Kingdom by acclaimed filmmaker Kim Nguyen, offering a reflective take on war memories. Another anticipated title is Ceremony, which previously gained recognition after winning the SXSW Documentary Spotlight Audience Award.

The festival will also showcase a diverse range of global stories, including films exploring technology and relationships social justice movements cultural traditions and personal narratives. Several projects will debut for the first time, reinforcing Hot Docs’ reputation as a platform for fresh and thought-provoking storytelling.

Canadian cinema will be strongly represented as well, with approximately 30 homegrown productions featured. These include documentaries addressing contemporary social issues personal journeys and cultural debates, adding depth and variety to the overall programme.

In addition to film screenings, the festival will host industry events networking opportunities and discussions aimed at supporting filmmakers and fostering collaboration within the documentary community.

Running until May 3, Hot Docs 2026 is set to once again bring together creators audiences and industry professionals for an engaging celebration of documentary filmmaking.
