How Obesity Affects Your Skin: Dermatologist Reveals 7 Conditions to Watch and Tips for Healthy Skin

Date:

Obesity impacts much more than just body weight or internal organs — it also affects your skin in ways that are often ignored. From constant friction in skin folds to hormonal imbalances, excess body fat can lead to a range of skin problems that can worsen if not managed properly. In a conversation with HT Lifestyle, Dr Purva Kundu, Consultant Dermatologist at Kaya Limited, explained that nearly 60 to 70 percent of adults who are overweight or obese tend to struggle with skin-related concerns, which can range from minor irritations to chronic diseases like psoriasis or acne.

Common Skin Problems Linked with Obesity

1. Excessive skin folds and rubbing: Extra weight can create more folds in the skin which trap moisture and increase friction. This environment often results in fungal infections and rashes.
2. Slower wound recovery and stretch marks: Obesity changes the production of collagen — the protein that keeps skin firm. This can lead to reduced skin strength and visible stretch marks.
3. Dry skin: Many people with obesity struggle with dehydration of the skin, leading to roughness and flakiness.
4. Altered blood circulation: Being overweight can affect the skin’s microcirculation. Studies have found that redness or flushing is often related to these blood flow changes.
5. Psoriasis: This chronic autoimmune skin disease shows up as red scaly patches and is more common or severe in people with obesity.
6. Acne breakouts: Extra weight can disrupt hormone levels, which boosts oil production and clogs pores, resulting in acne.
7. Atopic dermatitis flare-ups: Inflammation in the body due to excess fat can make eczema worse, causing frequent outbreaks and discomfort.

Tips to Keep Your Skin Healthy if You Are Overweight

Dr Purva Kundu suggests that simple lifestyle habits can make a huge difference in preventing these skin problems:

  • Choose an anti-inflammatory diet: Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and foods rich in omega-3s to keep inflammation low.
  • Focus on losing weight gradually: Even losing a small amount of weight can improve your skin’s condition and reduce risks of chronic issues like psoriasis.
  • Stay hydrated: Drinking enough water keeps your skin moisturised and prevents excessive dryness.

Remember: Always consult your dermatologist for personalised advice and do not ignore any unusual skin symptoms. Taking care of your skin should be part of your overall health journey if you’re trying to manage your weight.
