India Silence Critics With Multiple ICC Titles Ending Long Trophy Drought

Date:

After years of criticism and near misses on the global stage the India national cricket team have finally turned the narrative around with a remarkable run of success in international tournaments. Once mocked by sections of Western media for failing to win major trophies the team has now responded in the best possible way by securing multiple ICC titles in a short span of time.

Before the breakthrough triumph in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 India’s last ICC title had come more than a decade earlier when they won the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 in England. The long gap between trophies had led to growing pressure on the team despite consistently strong performances.

Over the years India reached several crucial stages but fell short at the final hurdle. They were runners up in the ICC World Twenty20 2014 after losing to Sri Lanka national cricket team in Dhaka. In the ICC World Twenty20 2016 they were considered favourites on home soil but were eliminated by the West Indies national cricket team in the semifinal.

Heartbreak continued in later tournaments. India dominated much of the 2019 Cricket World Cup before being knocked out by New Zealand national cricket team in the semifinal. Earlier in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 they had suffered a surprising defeat to the Pakistan national cricket team in the final.

The disappointment reached its peak during the 2023 Cricket World Cup final when India lost to Australia national cricket team in Ahmedabad despite entering the match unbeaten throughout the tournament. The defeat triggered widespread criticism and renewed debate about whether India could convert dominance into trophies.

During that period former captain Virat Kohli faced heavy scrutiny over the team’s inability to win ICC tournaments and comparisons were frequently drawn with MS Dhoni, the only Indian captain to win all three major ICC white ball trophies.

However the narrative has dramatically changed in recent years. India ended the drought by lifting the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 and followed it with another title in the ICC Champions Trophy before adding the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 to their growing collection. The achievements have transformed the team’s reputation and proved their dominance in white ball cricket.

The journey is not entirely complete yet. India are still chasing success in the ICC World Test Championship after losing the finals in 2021 and 2023. Another major goal will be reclaiming the Cricket World Cup title which they last won in 2011.

Looking further ahead cricket is also set to return at the 2028 Summer Olympics, presenting another historic opportunity for India. If the team manages to add these achievements to their recent successes it would mark one of the most remarkable eras in Indian cricket history and completely silence past criticism.
