iPhone 17 Pro Series May Feature Extended Camera Design to Support 8x Optical Zoom Upgrade

Date:

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 Pro lineup could arrive with a significant camera redesign that aims to boost telephoto zoom performance. According to recent leaks, the Pro models may debut with an elongated horizontal camera module stretching across the back panel, sparking speculation about its purpose.

While some early reports suggested this design shift was purely cosmetic or related to adjustments in the flash and LiDAR placement, a well-known industry tipster claims it could be to accommodate a larger telephoto camera sensor. This sensor upgrade might enable up to 8x optical zoom, a substantial improvement over the 5x zoom offered by the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Jon Prosser from FrontPageTech has also suggested that the extended gap between the triple-lens setup on the left and the flash-LiDAR combination on the right may be deliberately designed to house advanced telephoto hardware. This could lead to sharper, more versatile zoom capabilities across varying focal lengths.

Further supporting the speculation, a MacRumors report—citing an anonymous source—claims that both the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max may use a new 48-megapixel telephoto lens capable of continuous optical zoom. The movable lens design would allow seamless adjustments without sacrificing clarity.

Beyond the camera upgrades, the Pro variants are also expected to launch with a new Pro Camera app offering greater manual controls for photography and videography. Whether this app will replace the current Final Cut Camera app or be entirely new remains unclear.

In addition, the iPhone 17 Pro Max could feature an anti-reflective display similar to Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Ultra, a larger battery, and a new 24-megapixel TrueDepth front camera. Apple is rumored to unveil the iPhone 17 series on September 9, potentially alongside other updated devices.
