The world of health and wellness is buzzing about alkaline water — but is this mineral-enriched water genuinely a better option or just another trendy hype? As more people look for ways to upgrade everyday hydration, understanding what alkaline water really offers is crucial.
Alkaline water is basically regular water that has been enhanced with minerals like calcium magnesium and potassium which increase its pH level making it less acidic. Suvarna Sawant head dietician at Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital Mumbai explains that the pH scale runs from 0 to 14 with anything above 7 considered alkaline. Natural water can pick up these minerals by flowing over rocks but most bottled alkaline water today comes from modern ionizers or added mineral blends.
So why the recent surge in popularity? According to Aakash Vaghela founder and MD of Evocus the pandemic played a huge role in changing how people think about daily wellness. He shared that since 2020 more consumers have turned to premium bottled waters with added benefits. The once niche product now sells widely across supermarkets e-commerce sites and quick-delivery apps.
Aakash says urban millennials and Gen Z buyers especially love alkaline water because they’re keen on long-term wellness and like to understand the science behind what they drink. The market for premium bottled water in India touched 1.2 billion dollars by 2024 growing steadily thanks to functional water trends. Today this is no longer just about quenching thirst but about making conscious informed choices.
But should everyone switch? Probably not. Sawant explains that your body naturally maintains its ideal pH balance around 7.4 thanks to your kidneys and lungs. For most healthy people drinking safe clean water is sufficient for proper hydration. So if you’re healthy and not dealing with specific acidity problems you may not need to pay extra for alkaline water.
That said certain people may see real benefits. Studies show that water with a pH around 8.8 can deactivate pepsin an enzyme that triggers acid reflux. People with frequent heartburn or acidity may therefore find some relief by switching to alkaline water. Some research also hints that alkaline water could slightly improve post-workout blood flow or help with mild blood sugar control but more evidence is needed to confirm these benefits.
Like all wellness fads alkaline water comes with cautions too. Drinking too much high-pH water especially above pH 10 could lead to digestion issues affect mineral absorption and rarely cause mild symptoms like nausea or muscle spasms. Experts recommend that unless you have acid reflux or are an endurance athlete you’re better off drinking good quality plain water daily to stay hydrated.
Always remember this information is meant to guide you and should never replace medical advice. If you have health conditions or concerns always consult your doctor before making big changes to your diet or hydration habits.
