Many people wonder if caffeine protects the cardiovascular system or harms it. To clear the confusion, Dr Vikas Kohli, a leading cardiologist and Founder of the Child Heart Foundation, shares his personal caffeine habits and explains how much coffee per day is considered safe for heart health.

Dr Kohli says he enjoys one cup of coffee every morning, which not only gives him energy but also offers heart-friendly benefits. Scientific research backs this up. Studies published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology reveal that drinking two to three cups of coffee per day is linked to a lower risk of heart disease and sudden cardiac death. Similarly, The Ochsner Journal highlights that moderate caffeine intake, between one and three cups daily, is safe and even beneficial for the heart.

How caffeine affects different people

Not everyone reacts to caffeine the same way. Some people experience jitteriness or sleep disturbances, while others can drink coffee without side effects. For healthy individuals, one to three cups per day is generally safe and does not increase the risk of arrhythmias or premature heartbeats. Those with caffeine sensitivity, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or certain sleep disorders should limit intake. Pregnant women are advised to consult their doctor before consuming coffee.

Other health benefits of coffee

Coffee is more than just a heart-health beverage. Research shows that moderate coffee consumption may:

  • Lower the risk of type 2 diabetes
  • Offer neuroprotective benefits by reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease

Safe caffeine limits

One cup of coffee has about 100mg of caffeine. The U.S. FDA recommends a maximum daily limit of 400mg, which is equal to around four cups. Drinking coffee in the morning is advised, as it boosts energy during the day and reduces the chances of insomnia at night.
