James Gunn Responds to Zack Snyder Fans Allegedly Targeting Superman’s Box Office Ahead of July Release

Date:

As excitement builds for the upcoming Superman film directed by James Gunn, the filmmaker has addressed the growing online backlash from a section of Zack Snyder supporters who appear intent on impacting the movie’s box office performance. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn expressed his openness to such reactions, stating that opposition can actually benefit a project.

Starring David Corenswet in the iconic role, Superman is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11 and marks a significant reboot in the DC cinematic timeline. This film will launch a brand-new DC Universe, departing from the previous DCEU timeline where Henry Cavill portrayed Superman under Snyder’s direction.

When questioned about the online negativity, Gunn said, “I don’t mind it. I think it’s good. You don’t want everyone to be on your side all the time. It’s healthy to have an opposing force now and then.” He also hinted that one of the actors from the film—though unnamed—is quite emotionally involved and frequently checks public reactions online. Gunn reassured this actor by highlighting that Superman’s trailer received an overwhelmingly positive response, with nearly 97–98 percent of it being favorable.

He further added, “Some of the criticism gets absurd. No matter how well something is received, someone will always find a controversy—like when the sun hurting Superman was a big talking point.”

Gunn’s Superman will establish a fresh tone and storyline for the beloved character, untethered from Snyder’s past interpretation. The film aims to capture both legacy fans and new audiences as it lays the foundation for a newly structured DC cinematic universe.
