Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner has addressed the criticism surrounding his decision to withdraw from the Davis Cup Final 8, confirming he will skip the event to prioritize his recovery and preparation for the upcoming tennis season.
The World No. 2, who helped Italy secure Davis Cup titles in 2023 and 2024, was notably absent from the squad list announced by the Italian Tennis Federation on Monday. The five-man lineup includes Lorenzo Musetti, Flavio Cobolli, Matteo Berrettini, Simone Bolelli, and Andrea Vavassori, with Filippo Volandri as captain.
Sinner’s decision has stirred controversy back home. Tennis legend Nicola Pietrangeli, who led Italy to their first Davis Cup title in 1976, criticized the move, calling it a “slap in the face for Italian sport.” Pietrangeli expressed disappointment, saying that wearing the national colors should remain a top priority for athletes.
The Italian media also joined the backlash. Gazzetta dello Sport’s front page urged Sinner to “think it over again,” while an editorial questioned his reasoning, pointing out his participation in exhibition events like the Six Kings Slam in Riyadh, which he won recently.
In response, Sinner explained his decision during an interview with Sky Sports Italy, emphasizing the importance of rest. “My team and I decided that I need a longer break this year. The season has been demanding, and I want to prepare properly for the next one. The goal is to be in top form for Australia,” he said.
Sinner, who is currently competing at the ATP 500 in Vienna, is expected to play the Paris Masters before concluding his season at the ATP Finals — just days before the Davis Cup begins. His absence marks a significant moment for Italian tennis, as fans debate the balance between professional priorities and national pride.
