Jannik Sinner Targets Growth After US Open Defeat to Carlos Alcaraz

Date:

Carlos Alcaraz reclaimed the world No.1 ranking after defeating Jannik Sinner in the US Open final, extending their high-profile rivalry that has already defined the 2025 tennis season. The Spaniard secured a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday night, earning his sixth Grand Slam title and second US Open crown.

Alcaraz showed his versatility and tactical brilliance throughout the tournament, dropping just one set—the one he conceded in the final. Meanwhile, Sinner admitted that he struggled with predictability and lacked variety in his game. “I was very predictable today on court,” Sinner said. “Carlos changed things up and adapted, while I stuck to the same patterns. If I want to beat him, I need to step out of my comfort zone.”

Sinner, who has already won four Grand Slams and held the world No.1 spot for 65 weeks, is now committed to expanding his game. He acknowledged the need to integrate more variation, such as serve-and-volley tactics, drop shots, and unpredictable returns. “I’m going to try to make changes, even if I lose a few matches. The goal is to become a more complete tennis player,” he added.

The rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz is shaping into one of the sport’s greatest. They have already faced each other 15 times since 2021, including five finals this year alone. Coaches on both sides have highlighted the importance of constant adaptation. Juan Carlos Ferrero, Alcaraz’s coach, said a post-Wimbledon training camp focusing on tactical improvement played a key role in the Spaniard’s victory.

The Italian has faced similar lessons before. Novak Djokovic once pointed out his lack of variation during Wimbledon 2022, which prompted Sinner to diversify his play and eventually rise to world No.1. Now, with Alcaraz as the man to beat, Sinner knows his path forward requires embracing change and unpredictability.

As tennis looks to its next great rivalry, Alcaraz and Sinner are already drawing comparisons to the legendary Djokovic–Nadal matchups, with both players showcasing their unique strengths. Their next encounter promises another thrilling chapter in this modern duel.
