Fans hoping to unwrap The Summer I Turned Pretty movie as a festive surprise this Christmas will need to be patient. Creator Jenny Han has clarified that while the screenplay for the highly anticipated film is complete, the movie is far from ready for release.
Speaking at The Wrap’s 2025 Power Women Summit, Jenny Han revealed that although the writing stage is done, production has not yet begun. She explained that the intense timeline for Season 3 left no room to transition immediately into filming a feature-length movie. With post-production on the series wrapping just weeks before its July premiere on Amazon Prime Video, a holiday 2025 release was never realistic.
Han reassured fans that the story is moving forward thoughtfully. While keeping plot details tightly under wraps, she hinted that Belly’s journey will reach another significant milestone in the film. The movie will continue exploring the emotional triangle between Belly, Conrad and Jeremiah, following directly from the events of Season 3.
Interestingly, even the lead cast remains mostly in the dark. Lola Tung has confirmed she has not yet read the script, despite knowing it exists, while Christopher Briney joked about being glad he is not part of the writing process.
For now, the message is clear. The movie is coming, but not as a Christmas release. Jenny Han is taking extra time to ensure the next chapter at Cousins Beach delivers the emotional payoff fans are waiting for.
