Jobe Bellingham Makes Borussia Dortmund Debut in 2025 Club World Cup Draw Against Fluminense

Date:

English midfielder Jobe Bellingham made his official debut for Borussia Dortmund during their 2025 FIFA Club World Cup Group F opener against Brazil’s Fluminense, which ended in a goalless draw at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on June 17.

Despite not being named in the starting lineup, Bellingham’s entry into the game in the 59th minute marked a significant moment for fans and the club. He replaced veteran midfielder Pascal Gross, offering a glimpse of his potential in midfield. Borussia Dortmund head coach Niko Kovac had earlier confirmed that the 19-year-old would start from the bench, citing his short acclimatization period with the team following his recent transfer.

“Jobe won’t start today since he’s only had a week with us, which isn’t enough time to fully adapt to our tactics and playing principles,” Kovac was quoted saying before the match.

Jobe Bellingham joined Borussia Dortmund from Sunderland in a high-profile $38 million transfer just a week before the match—setting a new record fee for Sunderland after their promotion to the Premier League. Expectations are high for the younger brother of Jude Bellingham, who had previously risen to prominence during his own three-year stint with Dortmund before making a high-profile move to Real Madrid in 2023.

During the 2024-25 season with Sunderland, Jobe tallied four goals and three assists across 40 appearances, showcasing his ability to contribute both defensively and offensively. Known for his versatility, he can seamlessly operate as both a deep-lying No. 8 or an advanced No. 10 playmaker.

His debut with Dortmund signals the beginning of what many expect to be a promising career at the top level. As Dortmund continues their Club World Cup campaign, all eyes will remain on Jobe as he aims to follow in the footsteps of his elder brother and leave his own mark in European football.
