Karun Nair Likely to Retain Spot for Manchester Test Despite Struggles with Batting Form

Date:

India’s Test squad is showing signs of stability even amid criticism, and middle-order batter Karun Nair appears set to be retained for the fourth Test in Manchester. Although his performance in the ongoing five-match Test series has left much to be desired, selectors and team management seem inclined to offer him another opportunity to prove his mettle.

So far, Nair has only managed 131 runs across three Tests, averaging slightly above 21. While he has looked technically solid and has gotten decent starts, he has failed to convert those into impactful scores. With rising scrutiny from fans and experts alike, his inclusion in the playing XI has become a major talking point.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra weighed in on the situation, suggesting that Nair deserves one final go. “There is definitely a question about the No. 3 slot. Karun Nair hasn’t looked completely out of touch, but he hasn’t made the runs to cement his place either. I would still consider giving him one more match at No. 3, because this could be his last chance,” Chopra stated.

Backing Nair’s inclusion, India’s captain Shubman Gill also voiced support during a pre-match press conference. Gill emphasized that Nair’s technique remains intact and that he’s been striking the ball well in practice. “Karun didn’t bat at this number in the first match. Making a comeback in such a competitive series is always tough. But he’s shown promise. Sometimes, you just need one big knock to find your rhythm again. We’re hopeful he can turn things around,” said Gill.

The third Test ended in heartbreak for India, with the team falling short by just 22 runs in a thrilling finale on Day 5. Despite a valiant unbeaten 61 from Ravindra Jadeja and late resistance from Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, the lower order couldn’t carry India past the finish line.

With the fourth Test approaching, India are likely to retain a combination similar to their Headingley lineup, especially with Nitish Kumar Reddy and Akash Deep ruled out due to injury. This means both Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair are expected to feature in the starting XI. The match in Manchester might very well be a make-or-break opportunity for Nair to reassert his place in India’s Test future.
