Keanu Reeves Once Changed His Name for Hollywood But Reverted Back Months Later: “A Real Hollywood Moment”

Date:

Hollywood star Keanu Reeves recently revealed an interesting story about his early acting career — a time when he was almost known by a completely different name. Before becoming a global icon through blockbusters like The Matrix and John Wick, Reeves once changed his name to “KC Reeves” at the suggestion of his manager.

Speaking on a podcast, Reeves shared how the idea came about when he first moved to Los Angeles as a young actor in his early twenties. “I was around 20 when I arrived in LA. My manager looked at me and said, ‘We need to change your name.’ I remember walking on the beach thinking, what if I really did that? My middle name is Charles, so I thought maybe Chuck. I grew up on Spadina Street — so maybe Chuck Spadina? Or even something like Templeton. Eventually, I went with KC Reeves,” the actor recalled.

Despite the change, the name never felt right to him. Reeves said he even struggled to respond when people called him by the new name during auditions. “I just couldn’t do it. They’d say ‘KC Reeves,’ and I wouldn’t even answer. Six months later, I dropped it and said, ‘I’m not doing this.’ That was a real Hollywood moment,” Reeves shared with a laugh.

The actor was officially credited as “KC Reeves” in one of his earliest projects, a 1986 made-for-TV movie, before deciding to return to his original name. That choice eventually helped him build one of Hollywood’s most recognizable careers.

On the professional front, Reeves is set to appear next in the upcoming comedy film Good Fortune, directed by Aziz Ansari. The movie tells the story of a guardian angel who loses his wings while teaching valuable life lessons to a human. Good Fortune is scheduled to release this Friday, marking another exciting chapter in Reeves’ long and diverse film career.
