Sharing the new ball with Arshdeep Singh, the 23-year-old struck twice in his opening over. His first delivery that mattered cut sharply through Ryan Rickelton’s defence, crashing into the stumps. Just two balls later, he produced a perfect outswinger to dismiss Quinton de Kock for a duck, with KL Rahul completing a clean catch behind the stumps. Rana later removed the dangerous Dewald Brevis with a clever slower ball, breaking South Africa’s counterattack and energising the Indian camp.
KL Rahul, impressed with the young quick’s composure and aggression, praised Rana for bringing exactly the attributes India needs in modern ODI cricket. The captain highlighted his height, ability to hit the deck, and skill to generate pace consistently—traits that have been missing from India’s fast-bowling lineup in recent years.
