Kuldeep Yadav Opens Up on England Tour Snub Says Gautam Gambhir Was Honest About Team Balance

Date:

Kuldeep Yadav has finally spoken about his absence from the playing XI during India’s five-Test series against England earlier this year. The left-arm wrist-spinner, who is currently enjoying red-hot form in the 2025 Asia Cup, admitted that the team management prioritized batting depth over his inclusion in the side.

The 30-year-old spinner has been India’s standout performer in the Asia Cup 2025, claiming seven wickets in two matches, including a four-wicket haul against the UAE and a crucial spell against Pakistan. His match-winning performances have reignited the debate on why he was benched throughout the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, a series that ended 2-2 between India and England.

Speaking to reporters ahead of India’s Group A clash with Oman, Kuldeep clarified that head coach Gautam Gambhir was transparent with him. “The communication was clear. At times, I felt I could play, but due to batting depth and team combinations, I didn’t make it. Gautam Bhai was straightforward and told me it wasn’t about skill but about team composition and conditions. I respected that and used the time to learn,” Kuldeep said.

He further emphasized the importance of observing from the sidelines. “When you don’t play, you watch and learn more. It’s easy to blame others but tougher to accept challenges and work on your weaknesses. I chose to improve myself,” he added.

Kuldeep also admitted it wasn’t easy to immediately find his rhythm after sitting out the England series. “Challenges are always there. Rhythm is important, and when you don’t play consistently, it gets tough. But I used that time to build fitness and bowl long spells. Playing in the Duleep Trophy, even though I didn’t take wickets, helped me get my rhythm back,” he explained.

Currently the second-highest wicket-taker of the Asia Cup 2025, behind UAE’s Junaid Siddique, Kuldeep is focused on continuing his form as India prepares for their Super 4 stage matches, including a much-anticipated clash with Pakistan.
