Rohan Bopanna has officially ended his professional tennis journey at the age of 45, closing a memorable chapter that reshaped Indian tennis history. Over more than two decades on the ATP Tour, Bopanna evolved into a global force in doubles, capturing multiple Grand Slam triumphs and reaching the pinnacle of the world rankings.
One of Bopanna’s most inspiring accomplishments came in 2024 when he won the Australian Open men’s doubles title with Matt Ebden. At 43, just weeks away from turning 44, he became the oldest champion ever in any Grand Slam category. His dominant serving and calm net play proved that age was never a barrier to success.
That same season, Bopanna reached the world No.1 ranking in doubles, becoming the first Indian since Leander Paes to achieve this milestone. His achievement also made him the oldest player in tennis history to rise to the top spot in singles or doubles. Bopanna expressed how honored he was to show that athletes above 40 can still compete at elite levels.
His incredible run continued at the Miami Masters in 2024, where he and Ebden claimed the Masters 1000 title. This victory established Bopanna as the oldest Masters 1000 champion ever, beating his own previous record set the year before at Indian Wells. Additionally, he joined the elite club of Indian players who have competed in the final of every ATP Masters 1000 event.
Bopanna now steps away as one of India’s most admired tennis figures — a two-time Grand Slam winner, a former world No.1, and a symbol of longevity and perseverance. His contributions will inspire generations of tennis aspirants in India and beyond.
