Leonardo DiCaprio’s One Battle After Another Opens Below Expectations with $21 Million Weekend Forecast

Date:

Paul Thomas Anderson’s much-anticipated drama One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, has officially hit theaters but is off to a modest start at the domestic box office. The film, distributed by Warner Bros., opened in 3,634 theaters across the United States, bringing in $8.8 million on its first day and aiming for a $21 million opening weekend.

Industry experts initially projected a launch closer to $25 million or more, but the numbers are coming in lower than DiCaprio’s last major release, Killers of the Flower Moon, which started at $23.2 million in 2023. With an estimated production budget exceeding $130 million, the movie will need sustained audience support in the coming weeks to reach profitability.

Audience and Critical Reception

Despite the soft commercial start, One Battle After Another has captured strong critical acclaim and audience enthusiasm. Early viewers awarded it an ‘A’ CinemaScore, while critics gave the movie an impressive 97 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score stands at 87 percent, signaling that strong word-of-mouth could help the film’s long-term box office run.

The movie’s prestige factor, combined with Oscar season buzz, positions it as a potential awards contender, which could also boost performance across international markets, streaming platforms, and premium video-on-demand.

Financial Challenges and Warner Bros. Strategy

With a production cost north of $130 million, Warner Bros. is betting on long legs at the box office and post-theatrical revenue streams. Even if the film follows a trajectory similar to Killers of the Flower Moon, which earned $158.8 million globally, reaching profitability remains uncertain. However, Warner Bros. expects HBO Max streaming releases and premium digital sales to significantly contribute.

Warner Bros. Record-Breaking Year

The release of One Battle After Another arrives during a milestone year for Warner Bros. The studio recently became the first to cross $4 billion at the global box office in 2025, marking its biggest year since 2019. Powered by major hits such as A Minecraft Movie, Superman, and the racing drama F1, as well as horror successes like Final Destination: Bloodlines and The Conjuring, the studio has firmly positioned itself as Hollywood’s box office leader.

As the film continues its theatrical run, industry watchers are keeping a close eye on whether DiCaprio’s star power, Paul Thomas Anderson’s directorial acclaim, and awards momentum can transform a slow start into a long-term success story.
