New Line Cinema is revisiting its successful horror franchise with fresh momentum, as plans for a sequel to the 2016 hit Lights Out gain traction once again. The studio has officially brought on emerging screenwriter Connor Osborn McIntyre to develop the script for the much-anticipated follow-up.
The original film, directed by David F. Sandberg and written by Eric Heisserer, proved to be a major box office success. Made on a modest budget of under $5 million, it went on to earn more than $149 million globally, establishing itself as a standout entry in modern horror cinema.
For the sequel, key creative forces from the original project are returning in production roles. Lawrence Grey will once again produce, alongside Heisserer and Sandberg. Additional producers include Ben Everard and Lotta Losten, with James Wan’s Atomic Monster also backing the project, continuing its involvement from the first film.
While storyline details for Lights Out 2 remain tightly under wraps, expectations are high given the chilling premise of the original. The first movie followed a terrifying supernatural entity that emerges only in darkness, haunting a family and creating tension through its unique concept. The film featured performances from Teresa Palmer, Maria Bello, Gabriel Bateman, and Alexander DiPersia.
Connor McIntyre’s involvement signals a fresh creative direction for the sequel. The writer has been gaining recognition in Hollywood, having worked on the upcoming thriller Animals, directed by Ben Affleck and starring Gillian Anderson, Steven Yeun, and Kerry Washington. His original screenplay American Midnight also gained industry attention after appearing on the Black List and being acquired by Netflix.
Over the years, multiple attempts were made to develop a sequel, with different writers contributing drafts. However, with a new writer onboard and original producers returning, the project now appears to be firmly back on track.
