Lionel Messi experienced a tense moment after fans stormed the field during Inter Miami CF’s friendly clash against Independiente del Valle in Bayamón Puerto Rico. The incident unfolded in the closing stages of the match when several supporters breached security and ran onto the pitch in an attempt to get close to the Argentine superstar.
As the situation escalated one supporter approached Messi seeking a selfie while another appeared to request an autograph. A third individual tried to embrace him from behind just as security personnel rushed in to intervene. In the scramble a guard tackled one of the intruders which inadvertently caused Messi to lose balance and fall to the ground.
Fortunately there were no visible signs of injury and the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner quickly stood up and walked away looking visibly frustrated but composed. The atmosphere in the stadium had earlier been electric with close to 20000 fans in attendance giving Messi a warm reception.
The match itself had a delayed kickoff due to a disagreement regarding team kit colours with both sides eventually taking the field in black. Despite the disruption Inter Miami secured a 2 1 victory. Argentina’s Santi Morales opened the scoring in the 16th minute before Ecuador international Patrik Mercado equalised a minute later. Messi who entered as a second half substitute converted a penalty in the 70th minute sealing the win for the MLS side.
The fixture had originally been scheduled earlier in the month but was postponed due to a minor injury concern for Messi. The veteran forward who is widely regarded as one of football’s greatest players is also expected to feature in the upcoming FIFA World Cup though official confirmation regarding his participation is still awaited.
