Lionel Messi’s Stunning Free-Kick Secures Historic FIFA Club World Cup Victory for Inter Miami Against Porto

Date:

Lionel Messi delivered a moment of magic to lead Inter Miami to a landmark 2-1 win over FC Porto in the FIFA Club World Cup, scoring a signature free-kick that curled into the top-right corner. This thrilling strike not only secured Miami’s first-ever victory in the prestigious tournament but also marked a historic achievement—the first time an MLS team defeated a European club in a competitive match.

The match, held on an electrifying night, saw Inter Miami trailing 0-1 at halftime. However, just two minutes into the second half, Telasco Segovia brought Miami level with a well-placed finish following a precise cross from Marcelo Weigandt. The comeback was complete in the 68th minute when Messi stepped up to take a free-kick from the edge of the box and, in classic fashion, curled the ball past the goalkeeper into the top corner.

Messi’s goal sent fans into a frenzy and instantly became a highlight of the tournament. Speaking after the match, Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano praised Messi’s relentless spirit and leadership. “Beyond his goal, what stands out is his hunger and determination. Even in the final minutes, despite being tired and carrying a knock, he kept contributing both in attack and defence. His presence gives us more than a tactical edge—it’s his winning mentality,” Mascherano said.

Messi himself expressed joy and pride following the result. “We put in a lot of effort, and today we were able to bounce back. I saw the goalkeeper wasn’t covering his post during the free-kick, and I decided to aim for that space,” he explained. Reflecting on the team’s growth, he added, “We had a bitter feeling after the first match, but we’ve evolved. Even though Porto dominated parts of the game, we fought with our strengths. Next, we face Palmeiras—a global powerhouse. It’ll be another big test.”

The Argentine’s performance once again reaffirmed his legendary status, and Inter Miami’s victory has set a new benchmark for MLS clubs on the international stage.
