Liverpool and Chelsea Falter in Premier League as Champions League Qualification Race Intensifies

Date:

The battle for a top-five finish in the Premier League took another dramatic turn as Liverpool and Chelsea both dropped crucial points, denting their hopes of securing a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Liverpool suffered a 2-1 defeat away to Brighton & Hove Albion, marking another setback in what has been a challenging title defence. Despite a recent boost in Europe, the reigning champions struggled to cope with Brighton’s intensity, with Danny Welbeck netting twice and Milos Kerkez also finding the score sheet.

Manager Arne Slot pointed to the absence of key players, including Alisson Becker and Mohamed Salah, as factors behind the disappointing performance. Liverpool’s recent form has been concerning, with just one point collected from their last three league matches.

Chelsea, meanwhile, failed to capitalise on Liverpool’s slip, suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat against Everton. The loss leaves them outside the top five and under pressure as the season approaches its final stretch.

Everton delivered an impressive display, with Beto scoring twice and Iliman Ndiaye adding a standout goal. The result boosts Everton’s position and keeps them firmly in the race for European qualification.

Chelsea’s new head coach Liam Rosenior now faces a difficult task to revive the squad’s confidence after a string of poor results across competitions. The London side has struggled for consistency, including a heavy Champions League exit earlier in the campaign.

Elsewhere, Manchester United played out a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth, maintaining their position in the top four, while Arsenal continue to lead the title race.

With only a few matches remaining, the race for Champions League qualification is becoming increasingly competitive, with clubs like Brentford and Fulham also pushing for a spot among Europe’s elite.
