Manchester City players have stepped forward to refund travelling supporters following a disappointing UEFA Champions League defeat against Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt. The English champions suffered a surprising 3–1 loss in the far north of Norway, a result that left both players and fans stunned and prompted an immediate gesture of accountability from the squad.
A total of 374 Manchester City supporters made the long and challenging journey above the Arctic Circle to back their team in freezing conditions. After what several players described as an unacceptable performance, the club’s leadership group decided to personally reimburse the cost of match tickets as an apology to those fans who travelled midweek to Bodø.
The decision was led by a core group of senior players, including Erling Haaland, Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias. In a collective statement, the players acknowledged the effort and loyalty shown by supporters, stressing that fans should never feel taken for granted regardless of results on the pitch.
The statement highlighted that supporters had endured extreme weather and long travel hours to support the team during a difficult evening. Refunding the tickets was described as a small but sincere gesture to recognise that commitment and to accept responsibility for the team’s performance.
On the pitch, Manchester City struggled from the opening stages of the match. Bodø/Glimt took an early lead through Kasper Høgh, who scored twice in quick succession to leave City reeling before halftime. The hosts extended their advantage after the break to make it 3–0, capitalising on defensive lapses and energetic pressing.
Although Rayan Cherki managed to score a consolation goal for City, hopes of a comeback were effectively ended when Rodri was shown a red card shortly afterwards. Playing with ten men in harsh conditions, City were unable to regain control of the match.
After the game, Erling Haaland spoke candidly about the result, describing the defeat as embarrassing and apologising directly to supporters who had travelled to watch the team. His comments reflected the wider frustration within the squad as City continue to experience an inconsistent run of form this season.
The loss adds pressure to a campaign that has already been affected by injuries and dropped points in domestic competitions. Recent draws against Chelsea and Brighton, followed by a heavy defeat to Manchester United in the derby, have raised concerns about momentum and squad depth.
