Margot Robbie Backs Jacob Elordi’s Bold Casting in Wuthering Heights and Praises His Performance as a Once-in-a-Generation Talent

Date:

Margot Robbie has stepped forward to defend Emerald Fennell’s upcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights, addressing the online debate surrounding Jacob Elordi’s casting as Heathcliff. In a new interview with Vogue, Robbie—who stars as Catherine Earnshaw—described the film as a sweeping, emotionally charged reimagining of Emily Brontë’s classic and even compared Fennell’s vision to “this generation’s Titanic.”

As conversations continue around the novel’s description of Heathcliff as “dark-skinned,” some readers criticised the decision to cast Australian actor Jacob Elordi. Robbie acknowledged the concerns but urged audiences to trust the creative process, insisting that Elordi’s interpretation captures the character’s intensity and turmoil. “I watched him become Heathcliff. He is Heathcliff. Just wait. I promise you’ll be satisfied,” she said, emphasising her complete confidence in his portrayal.

Robbie also highlighted the legacy of actors who played the iconic role before—Laurence Olivier, Ralph Fiennes, Tom Hardy—and expressed excitement at seeing Elordi join that long-standing tradition. She added that his depth and dedication remind her of Daniel Day-Lewis, calling Elordi “this generation’s Daniel Day-Lewis.”

Casting director Kharmel Cochrane also responded to backlash, recounting harsh reactions but urging the public to withhold judgment until seeing the film. She defended the production’s artistic freedom, reminding audiences that adaptations evolve and reinterpret stories for new generations. “It’s art. It’s not bound to real life. Just wait and then decide,” she said.

Speaking about taking on the role of Cathy, Robbie shared that the character’s contradictions drew her in—someone she both understood and couldn’t fully grasp. She described Cathy as a complex emotional puzzle. Director Emerald Fennell added that Robbie’s commanding presence made her perfect for the role, calling the actress “a provocateur with the star power Cathy demands.”

Robbie applauded Fennell’s daring approach to the novel, stating that the film has the emotional scale and cultural impact to become a defining love tragedy of this generation. Wuthering Heights is set to release in February 2026, promising a bold and contemporary cinematic experience.
