Marin Cilic Proves His Grit With Big Wimbledon Win Over Draper After Battling Knee Surgeries and Challenger Tour Comeback

Date:

Marin Cilic’s remarkable return to the Wimbledon spotlight has captured the spirit of perseverance in professional tennis. The Croatian veteran, once ranked as high as world No.3 and a US Open champion in 2014, overcame years of knee troubles and multiple surgeries to notch one of his most meaningful victories yet — sending Britain’s Jack Draper, the fourth seed, out of the tournament in the second round.

For Cilic, now 36, the journey back has been anything but easy. After his knee troubles began at an ATP event in Pune, India, in January 2023, Cilic was forced to pull out before the quarterfinals due to a torn lateral meniscus. This injury sidelined him from the Australian Open and dropped him out of the top 1000.

Despite setbacks, Cilic’s belief in his ability never wavered. He endured several surgeries and long periods of rehab, followed by a return to the grind of the Challenger circuit — the second tier of professional tennis. His comeback wasn’t glamorous, but it was gritty. Ranked outside the top 1000, Cilic accepted wildcards and entry into small Challenger events to find his rhythm again — a path famously taken by stars like Andre Agassi and Andy Murray.

His resilience paid off. In August 2024, he made headlines by winning an ATP 250 event in Hangzhou while ranked 777 in the world — the lowest-ranked player to win an ATP Tour title that year. Earlier this season, he captured another Challenger crown in Girona, marking the longest gap in history between two Challenger-level titles, surpassing Andy Murray’s record.

Still far from the spotlight of Grand Slams, Cilic continued to chase match fitness, playing more Challenger tournaments and even winning in Nottingham as he transitioned to the grass courts. By the time he arrived at Wimbledon 2025, he was armed with match sharpness and unwavering belief.

Against Draper, Cilic delivered vintage performances that reminded fans of his days battling the Big Three. His aggressive baseline hitting, mental toughness, and signature fist pumps were all on display in his 6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 win. Cilic later described the match as one of the best moments of his two-decade career, not only because of the result but because of the journey that brought him back to this stage.

“It’s been a long journey full of doubts and tough decisions but the spark to keep going never faded,” Cilic said afterward. He credited his time grinding on the Challenger circuit as key to his return, saying that match practice at any level is irreplaceable.

For Draper, the loss came with respect. “Not many players can completely bully me off the court,” Draper admitted, praising Cilic’s ability to dictate the match.

Cilic’s story is a testament to his resilience, belief, and love for the sport. After surgeries, setbacks, and stepping away from the big stages, Marin Cilic is back doing what he does best: competing at the highest level and reminding the tennis world what true grit looks like.
