A complex and high-value conflict between Kylian Mbappe and Paris Saint Germain has escalated into one of the most significant legal confrontations in modern football. Their long running tensions became fully public when both parties appeared before the French labour court on Monday presenting enormous financial claims that exceed 700 million euros combined.
Mbappe now representing Real Madrid is demanding 263 million euros which he says corresponds to unpaid salaries bonuses and additional compensation triggered by what he claims was a misclassified contract. His legal team argues that the agreement should have been recognised as a permanent contract under French labour law a change that would entitle him to further damages for unfair dismissal loss of wages and moral harassment. They also emphasise that Mbappe never relinquished monetary rights and that the club failed to provide evidence of any alleged agreements.
PSG responded with an even larger request of 440 million euros asserting that Mbappe’s actions caused substantial financial loss. A key component of their filing is the collapse of a proposed 300 million euro transfer to Saudi club Al Hilal in 2023 which Mbappe declined. The club claims this decision deprived them of an unprecedented transfer fee and generated additional fallout including reputational damage and loss of negotiating leverage. They also accuse Mbappe of withholding his intention not to extend his contract for nearly eleven months a move they say demonstrated disloyalty and allowed him to leave on a free transfer.
The dispute also highlights the tense summer of 2023 when Mbappe announced he would not trigger the extension clause in his PSG contract. He says the club isolated him by excluding him from the pre season tour training him with outgoing players and benching him for the league opener. PSG maintains that his later reintegration was based on a verbal understanding that he would forgo certain bonuses if he chose to leave as a free agent. Mbappe’s lawyers deny such an arrangement ever existed.
This confrontation dates back to the dramatic contract saga of 2022 when PSG offered their most lucrative deal ever to keep their star forward only for him to inform the club a year later that he would not extend beyond 2024. He refused the record breaking Al Hilal offer and ultimately joined Real Madrid for free after recording 256 goals in 308 appearances for PSG.
The French labour tribunal will issue its decision on December 16 leaving both sides awaiting the outcome of one of football’s most financially consequential disputes.
