India celebrated a historic moment on March 8 as they successfully defended the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title with a commanding victory over New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The win made India the first team in history to retain the T20 World Cup and also the first host nation to lift the trophy on home soil. While the dominant performance from the players captured headlines, a heartfelt message from MS Dhoni to head coach Gautam Gambhir quickly became one of the most talked-about moments after the final.
Former India captain Dhoni took to Instagram to congratulate the team and coaching staff following the memorable victory. In his post, he gave a special shoutout to Gambhir, playfully encouraging the usually serious coach to smile more often. Dhoni wrote that Gambhir’s smile looked great on him and that combining his usual intensity with a smile created a “killer combo.” The message instantly caught the attention of fans online because of the long-standing speculation around the relationship between the two former teammates.
Dhoni and Gambhir were both present at the stadium before the final began. Along with Rohit Sharma, Dhoni brought the T20 World Cup trophy onto the field during the opening ceremony. The two World Cup-winning captains watched from the stands as India produced a spectacular all-round performance to secure the title.
Since taking charge of the Indian white-ball setup in July 2024, Gambhir has transformed the team into one of the most dominant sides in T20 cricket. Under his guidance and the leadership of captain Suryakumar Yadav, India has not lost a single T20I series. Their consistent run culminated in the successful defense of the T20 World Cup title in front of a packed home crowd.
India delivered a near-perfect performance in the final. Batting first, the Men in Blue piled up an imposing total of 255 runs. Explosive half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson powered the innings and put New Zealand under immense pressure.
In response, New Zealand struggled to keep up with the required run rate as India’s bowlers dominated proceedings. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah led the attack brilliantly, picking up four wickets to dismantle the opposition batting lineup. All-rounder Axar Patel provided crucial support with three wickets, helping India bowl out New Zealand for 159 and seal a massive 96-run victory.
Bumrah’s outstanding performance earned him the Player of the Match award in the final, while Sanju Samson was named Player of the Tournament after scoring an impressive 321 runs across five matches.
The victory marked another golden chapter in India’s cricket history and highlighted the successful partnership between captain Suryakumar Yadav and coach Gautam Gambhir. Amid the celebrations, Dhoni’s friendly message to Gambhir added a nostalgic and emotional touch, reminding fans of the legendary players who helped shape Indian cricket over the years.
