Natural Ways to Ease Menstrual Cramps — Expert Shares Food-Based Remedies for Pain Relief

Date:

Period discomfort can make daily routines feel challenging, but many women look for gentle, natural alternatives when they want to reduce cramps without relying on medication. Holistic health expert Khushi Chhabra highlights simple foods and everyday ingredients that may help ease bloating, soothe muscle tension, and stabilise mood during menstruation.

Chhabra explains that menstrual pain often stems from inflammation, hormonal shifts, and the tightening of uterine muscles. While painkillers may offer short-term relief, natural foods with anti-inflammatory and mood-supporting properties can be a safer choice for those who prefer remedies with minimal side effects.

One of her go-to recommendations is a combination of pineapple and cinnamon. Pineapple contains bromelain, a natural enzyme that helps reduce inflammation and relax the uterine muscles. When paired with cinnamon, which supports healthier blood flow and helps reduce uterine spasms, this duo may offer relief from painful cramps and discomfort.

In addition to this, Chhabra suggests several other natural options that can support menstrual wellness. Dark chocolate (with 70% or more cocoa) may help improve serotonin levels, relax the muscles, and provide comfort during mood fluctuations. She also emphasises the role of hydration and light walking, which can ease bloating and help the body stay balanced during periods.

Seeds such as pumpkin, flax, and sesame are also recommended for their magnesium and zinc content, minerals that support hormonal balance and offer relief from menstrual tension. Another beneficial remedy is ginger-cinnamon water, a simple drink that may reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and support a smoother menstrual flow.

These natural remedies are commonly used to support overall menstrual comfort; however, they should not replace professional medical advice. Women with severe or persistent period pain are encouraged to seek guidance from a healthcare expert.
