A new medical analysis has brought fresh insight into how the heart responds to daily caffeine especially among people already living with atrial fibrillation. Contrary to long-standing warnings that coffee may worsen irregular heart rhythms new findings suggest that maintaining a usual cup of coffee each morning could actually help stabilise symptoms for some individuals.
The insight was shared by cardiologist Dr Dmitry Yaranov who addressed the long-held belief that caffeine acts as a trigger for AFib. Speaking about research presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2025 he noted that adults diagnosed with atrial fibrillation who continued their routine of drinking one cup of coffee a day experienced fewer rhythm disturbances compared to those who eliminated caffeine altogether. The study included around 200 participants and observed that those who kept their coffee habit were 39 percent less likely to encounter an irregular heartbeat episode.
Dr Yaranov emphasised that the findings do not suggest increasing caffeine intake or beginning coffee consumption for those who rarely drink it. Instead the results point toward the stability that comes from maintaining an established routine. He explained that some individuals may have hearts that react strongly to caffeine while others experience no adverse effects at all highlighting that heart responses are highly personalised.
Researchers involved in the study added that naturally caffeinated beverages like tea or coffee may be reasonable options for adults with AFib who already enjoy them. However they cautioned that certain people may still find caffeine aggravates their symptoms underscoring the importance of individual monitoring and medical guidance. While the findings challenge long-standing assumptions experts continue to advise patients to consult their healthcare provider before making changes to their caffeine habits.
