NorthEast United FC (NEUFC) created history at the 134th Durand Cup 2025 by defending their crown in style, thrashing debutants Diamond Harbour FC (DHFC) 6-1 at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata. The win makes NEUFC only the fourth team in the 137-year-old tournament’s history to successfully retain the title after Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and Border Security Force.
NorthEast United’s Road to Glory
Despite financial challenges and salary suspensions faced across several ISL clubs, NEUFC decided not to skip Asia’s oldest football tournament. Under the guidance of coach Juan Pedro Benali and with full support from owner John Abraham, the Highlanders fielded a strong squad determined to continue their legacy.
The gamble paid off. Wearing black jerseys emblazoned with “Champions” in gold, NEUFC lifted the Durand Cup once again in front of jubilant fans.
Match Highlights: NEUFC 6-1 DHFC
The Highlanders were clinical throughout the match. Goals came from Asheer Akhtar (30’), Parthib Gogoi (45+1’), Thoi Singh (50’), Jairo Samperio (82’), Andre Rodriguez (86’), and Alaaeddine Ajaraie (90+3’ pen). DHFC’s consolation goal came from Luka Majcen in the 68th minute.

The victory underlines NEUFC’s status as a rising powerhouse in Indian football and shows how commitment and preparation can lead to glory, even in challenging times.
