Tennis legend Novak Djokovic faced an unexpected challenge during his second-round match at the ATP Shanghai Masters 2025, collapsing and vomiting on the court due to intense heat and humidity. The 24-time Grand Slam champion struggled through sweltering conditions as temperatures soared near 30°C with over 80% humidity, making it one of the toughest matches of the tournament.
Despite visibly suffering and losing the opening set to Yannick Hanfmann, Djokovic showed immense determination to stage a dramatic comeback, eventually winning 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. His physical resilience drew admiration from fans and fellow players alike as he pushed through exhaustion to secure his place in the third round.
Speaking after the match, Djokovic said, “It’s brutal out there. Every player feels the same, but with over 80 percent humidity and continuous heat, it’s extremely tough to breathe and recover. I just had to weather the storm.”
The Serbian star wasn’t alone in facing physical distress. The extreme heat in Shanghai has impacted several players, including Jannik Sinner, who was forced to retire during his third-set clash against Tallon Griekspoor due to cramps and fatigue.
After overcoming the heat scare, Djokovic returned to court to defeat Jaume Munar in the third round, securing a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 victory. However, his struggles continued as he took multiple medical timeouts and collapsed briefly after the second set. Still, his relentless determination powered him through to reach the quarterfinals, where he is set to face Zizou Bergs from Belgium.
The ATP Shanghai Masters 2025 has proven to be both a test of skill and endurance, highlighting how environmental conditions can push even the best athletes to their limits. Djokovic’s ability to fight back under such harsh conditions has once again reminded fans why he remains one of tennis’ all-time greats.
