Nutrition Expert Recommends Five Soothing Foods and Drinks to Ease Ongoing Acidity Issues

Date:

Chronic acidity can make everyday life uncomfortable, causing burning sensations in the chest, heaviness after meals, and persistent digestive distress. According to nutrition specialist Annie Kanwar, founder of Functional Medicine International (FMI), the true cause of long-term acidity is often linked to digestion problems rather than excess acid itself. She explains that factors such as low stomach acid, sluggish bile flow, overeating, stress, food intolerances, and gut infections like H. pylori commonly trigger symptoms. Instead of relying on frequent antacids, she advises adopting a targeted diet that supports a healthier digestive system.

Annie emphasises avoiding spicy foods, caffeine, fried items, alcohol, and potential irritants such as gluten or dairy for those sensitive to them. Improving gut health with calming and anti-inflammatory foods can significantly reduce acidity. To help manage symptoms, she highlights five stomach-friendly options: ginger water for motility and inflammation relief, coconut water for its natural alkalinity and electrolytes, aloe vera juice or cabbage juice to soothe the gut lining, oatmeal for fibre-driven acid absorption, and bananas as a natural antacid that promotes smoother digestion. Each option has specific recommended frequencies to support long-term gut balance.

She warns that recurring acidity, bloating, burning despite medication, nausea, burping or ongoing fatigue may indicate an underlying condition needing medical attention. Annie reminds readers that acidity is treatable, but lasting relief comes from addressing the root cause—optimising the entire digestive system rather than only neutralising stomach acid. This guidance is meant for information only and should not replace professional medical advice. Always consult a doctor regarding persistent symptoms.
