Nutrition Expert Reveals Four Everyday Foods That Naturally Ease Constipation

Date:

Digestive discomfort caused by constipation is a common issue, especially when bowel movements become irregular or incomplete. While occasional constipation is usually harmless, persistent digestive sluggishness often points toward dietary gaps or lifestyle imbalances. Instead of immediately turning to medication, many nutrition experts suggest starting with natural food-based solutions that gently stimulate digestion and support gut health.

According to nutritionist Deepsikha Jain, who holds a Master’s degree in Global Public Health Nutrition and is a certified diabetes educator, certain commonly available foods can work as natural laxatives. In a recent social media discussion, she explained how these foods help soften stools, increase fibre intake, and improve bowel movement frequency.

One of the most effective natural remedies she recommends is soaked black prunes. Consuming four to five prunes soaked overnight on an empty stomach can help relieve constipation due to their sorbitol content, a naturally occurring compound that softens stools and promotes smoother bowel movements.

Vegetables also play a crucial role in digestive health. Eating two to three servings of fibre-rich vegetables daily helps add bulk to stools, making them easier to pass. A fibre-rich diet supports intestinal movement and reduces the likelihood of chronic constipation.

Another surprising yet effective remedy is black coffee. When consumed without milk or sugar, black coffee can stimulate colon muscle contractions. This action supports the stomach-emptying process and encourages bowel movement, making it helpful for people who experience morning constipation.

Lastly, dragon fruit or green kiwi can significantly improve digestion. Both fruits are high in dietary fibre and water content, which help hydrate the digestive system and form bulkier stools. This combination supports regular bowel movements and reduces digestive strain.

The nutritionist also cautions that if fibre-rich foods and adequate hydration fail to relieve constipation, the issue may stem from deeper health concerns such as magnesium deficiency or thyroid dysfunction. In such cases, professional medical evaluation is strongly recommended to rule out underlying conditions.
