Breast cancer continues to be the most common cancer affecting women globally, and recognising the early signs can make a life-saving difference. While most people are aware that lumps can indicate cancer, experts stress that there are additional symptoms women should pay attention to during regular self-examinations.
Dr Tanaya — an Oxford-educated doctor, trainee gynaecologist and embryologist widely known as Dr Cuterus on Instagram — shared a crucial reminder during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In a recent awareness post, she urged women to perform monthly breast self-checks, ideally one week after their menstrual cycle, to spot any unusual changes early.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 2.3 million cases of breast cancer were reported worldwide in 2022. This makes self-awareness and timely screenings vital for early diagnosis and successful treatment.
Dr Tanaya listed five important symptoms that should never be ignored:
1️⃣ Unexpected nipple discharge — Any kind of discharge without stimulation should be medically evaluated.
2️⃣ Sudden skin colour changes — Redness, swelling, or inflammation can be warning signs.
3️⃣ Altered skin texture — If the breast skin resembles the surface of an orange (peau d’orange), it could signal underlying issues.
4️⃣ New growth or changes in nipples — Any new lumps or variations in nipple shape or direction require medical attention.
5️⃣ Check the ABCs: Armpits, Breasts, Collarbones — Lumps or changes in these areas may indicate cancer spread and should be checked by a professional.
Dr Tanaya emphasises that self-examination can save lives, but any concerning signs should be evaluated by a doctor instead of being self-diagnosed through the internet.
