Paediatrician Reveals Best Foods and Safety Tips to Protect Children from Dengue Fever

Date:

As heavy rains return this season, health experts are urging parents to strengthen both precautions and diet for their little ones. With dengue fever cases expected to rise, children remain one of the most vulnerable groups due to their still-developing immune systems and increased outdoor activities during school holidays and festive gatherings.

Dr Sharmila A Nayak, Consultant Paediatrician and Pediatric Endocrinologist at People Tree Hospital, highlights that prevention and nutrition play a critical role in reducing the risks. She explains that dengue fever spreads mainly through the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which breeds in stagnant water around homes, schools, and playgrounds. Even mild dengue can become severe if ignored, making early prevention and dietary support vital.

Foods That Help in Dengue Prevention for Children

Hydrating foods are crucial because dengue often leads to dehydration. Alongside water, parents can provide coconut water, lime water, buttermilk, or fresh watermelon juice. Light cucumber and tomato salad with rock salt is another refreshing way to maintain hydration.

Vitamin C–rich foods such as guava, kiwi, papaya, and amla help boost white blood cells and speed up recovery. Fun options include guava slices with black salt or papaya cubes with honey.

Foods to support platelet count are essential as dengue typically lowers platelet levels. Papaya leaf extract (in mild form), pomegranate seeds, pumpkin soup, and homemade pomegranate popsicles are nutritious and child-friendly choices.

Light proteins like moong dal khichdi with ghee, soft paneer curry, or steamed idlis are easy to digest while providing strength during illness.

Leafy greens and vegetables such as spinach, carrots, and drumstick (moringa) soup supply iron and vitamins that aid faster recovery.

Foods to Avoid During Dengue Recovery

Processed snacks, fried food, and packaged juices should be avoided as they slow healing. Instead, switch to wholesome options such as ragi laddus, banana with peanut butter, or homemade nutritious snacks.

Precautions to Protect Children from Dengue

  1. Eliminate mosquito breeding spots: Remove stagnant water from buckets, pots, toys, and drains.
  2. Protective clothing: Dress kids in long sleeves, pants, and socks. Use mosquito nets and safe repellents.
  3. Educate children: Teach them why covering up matters and how to avoid mosquito bites.
  4. Recognize early symptoms: High fever, rashes, headache, muscle pain, vomiting, or fatigue need immediate medical attention. Early diagnosis ensures smoother treatment.

Dr Nayak reminds parents that these habits, when practiced regularly, can drastically reduce dengue risk and keep children safe.
